2. Types of driving licenses

Chapter 1: Regulation

The model driving license in ‘bank card’ format was introduced in 2010.

The administrative validity of the driving license ‘bank card’ is 10 years maximum , it will therefore be necessary to change it without having to take a new exam .

Your driving license application must be submitted to the municipality where you are domiciled.

The issuance of the driving license gives rise to the payment of a fee of 20 euros to which a municipal tax may be added.

The class B moped (2 or 4 wheels)

AM license

  • Minimum 16 and 18 years old with passenger
  • The B license gives us access to the AM license
  • Compulsory course in AE (4h).
  • Practical exam in an independent sector or in a driving school .
  • There is no longer a provisional driving license

The car without a license

  • In Belgium, the law allows a person aged 16 or over to drive a car without a license.
  • The driver must hold and carry an AM license
  • A driver under the age of 18 is not permitted to carry a passenger.

The motorbike

A1 license

  • Minimum 18 years old
  • Displacement 125 cc , max power . 11kW
  • If you have had your  A1 license for two years you can receive the A2 license provided you have followed at least 4 hours of training and passed the practical exams.
  • you have had the B license for 2 years , you can after 4 hours of training in a driving school obtain the A1 license to drive a motorcycle of 125 cc maximum

A2 license

  • Minimum 20 years
  • Maximum power of 35 kW
  • The holder of the A2 license can obtain an A license after two years , provided they are 22 years old , complete 4 hours of training and pass the practical exams.

  • Minimum 22 years old
  • Power greater than 35 kW
  • Direct access at 24 years old, a person who does not have either of the two previous licenses can directly obtain their A license. With this license they can drive any type of motorcycle

Driving alone

 
  • Minimum age: 18 years to obtain your provisional driving license
  • Minimum internship  of 3 months  before being able to take your practical exam.
  • You obtain a provisional driving license valid for 18 months after 20 hours of lessons in a driving school.
  • You can take a person who has had the license for at least 8 years .
  • You must pass your practical test before your provisional license expires.
  • After 2 failures in the practical exam, 6 hours of lessons are compulsory with an approved driving school

Accompanied driving

 
  • provisional driving license can be obtained from the age of 17 .
  • Minimum internship of 9 months .
  • Minimum age for the practical exam 18 years .
  • You obtain a provisional driving license valid for 18 months .
  • Your guide must have had their driving license for at least 8 years .
  • You must pass your practical test before your provisional license expires.
  • After 2 failures in the practical exam,  6 hours of lessons are compulsory with an approved driving school.

The truck

Permis C

  • C license for goods transport vehicles with a maximum authorized mass of more than 3.5T (MMA)
  • C1 license for goods transport vehicles between 3.5T and 7.5T MMA

The bus / coach

License D

  • D license for passenger transport vehicles with more than 8 seats +1
  • D1 license for passenger transport vehicles with more than 8 seats +1 and a maximum of 16 seats +1
