VII. No overtaking

Chapter 6: Vehicles in Motion

Overtaking on the left is prohibited when the driver does not have sufficient visibility to see users coming in the opposite direction.

Prohibitions on overtaking on the left

It is prohibited to overtake on the left:

  • A hitched vehicle,
  • A 2-wheeled motor vehicle,
  • A vehicle with more than 2 wheels.
  • On a level crossing , unless it is equipped with barriers and/or lights.
  • In an intersection where right priority is applicable.
  • Overtaking can be done at an intersection where traffic is regulated by a qualified agent, light signals or road signals.
  • At intersections where you must give way with a pointed triangle or a STOP.
  • When approaching a hidden bend and at the top of a hill , unless there is a solid white line separating the two directions of traffic.
  • On the other hand, in a hidden bend or at the top of a hill, overtaking is authorized on a one-way roadway or a roadway with 2 directions of traffic with 4 or more lanes with at least 2 lanes for each direction of traffic.
  • It is prohibited to overtake a vehicle that exceeds a wide vehicle.
  • In this figure, it is prohibited to overtake the car that is overtaking a wide vehicle (regardless of the type of vehicle as long as it is wide).
  • It is forbidden to triple.
  • In this figure, it is prohibited to overtake the moped or motorcycle which is overtaking a wide vehicle (regardless of the type of vehicle as long as it is wide).
  • It is forbidden to triple.
  • On the other hand, it is authorized to overtake a moped or motorcycle which is overtaking a 2-wheeled vehicle.
  • In this figure,  it is allowed to triple.
  • In this figure, we can overtake the wide vehicle because it overtakes a 2-wheeled vehicle.
    It is allowed to triple.
  • However, it is allowed to triple on a roadway with 3 lanes in the same direction.
  • When the driver to be overtaken approaches or stops in front of a pedestrian, cyclist and cycle crossing.

Other prohibitions on overtaking on the left

  • On an elevated device (even a cyclist).
  • If there is a sign prohibiting overtaking on the left.
  • We have cycle street.
