Chapter 4: Vehicles

Things to know under the hood

Under the hood we find:

  1. Windshield washer fluid
  2. Coolant
  3. Engine oil
  4. The oil gauge
  5. The batteries
  6. Brake oil

Brake oil:

  • Allows braking force to be transmitted to all four wheels of the car when you press the brake pedal.
  • Spreads into the braking system
  • Located on the pedal side , under the hood on the right.
  • It is forbidden to open it because this liquid attracts humidity and damages your braking circuit.

Engine oil is used to:

  • Protect from corrosion
  • Cool the engine
  • Clean the engine
  • Lubricate engine parts
  • Avoid friction of engine parts

Oil gauge:

  • Allows you to check the oil level
  • A vehicle’s oil level should  be checked regularly , approximately every 1500 km , and especially  before a long journey .
  • Check on flat ground and cold
  • The risks associated with driving with an inappropriate oil level are significant: breakdown, engine failure , etc.

Coolant:

  • Maintains constant engine temperature
  • Prevents overheating and freezing of water
  • Limits the risks of oxidation and limescale deposits in the circuit.

Windshield washer fluid:

  • Used to clean car  windows
  • Ensures good visibility of the road for the driver and therefore maximum safety.
